Robotic primary product handling for food production

Exposed food is where automation gets hard.
That's where JLS gets precise.

Exposed products. Harsh washdowns. Tight speeds. Constant variation. JLS primary handling systems — for flow wrappers, thermoformers, trays, dough boards, sandwiches, bacon drafts, snack sticks, and frozen patty stacks — bring repeatable control to the part of the line where ordinary automation struggles.

Primary product handling is the robotic pick-and-place stage at the front of the packaging line, where vision-guided robots load food products into flow wrappers, thermoformers, trays, cartons, and cases. JLS builds these systems with JLS-engineered VOB 2.0 vacuum-on-board tooling and IP69K-capable hygienic construction for protein, dairy, bakery, snack, and prepared-food producers in USDA- and FDA-regulated plants — engineered, programmed, and supported entirely in-house.

Why JLS for primary product handling

Hygienic robotic loading where every cycle counts.

Primary loading is where speed, accuracy, and sanitation collide. JLS systems are engineered for the realities of food production — daily washdown, format mix, and the cost of going down.

04 — Proven across thousands of products

Proven across thousands of products

Fresh meat, sausage, poultry, dairy, cheese, bakery, frozen entrees, ready meals, snack sticks, confectionery. If it loads at the front of a food packaging line, we've probably handled it.

*IP69K is a capability JLS can build to; actual rating depends on machine and configuration.

Robotic primary product handling FAQs

Common questions on cost, products handled, sanitation, integration, and testing — answered by JLS application engineers.

Primary product handling is the robotic picking and placing of your actual food product — into thermoformer pockets, trays, flow wrappers, or onto the line — before secondary packaging. Vision-guided JLS robots identify product in random orientation and place it accurately at line speed, replacing repetitive manual loading positions.

JLS handles raw and cooked proteins, poultry, seafood, cheese and dairy, bakery and dough, portioned and formed products, plant-based and alternative proteins, and more. Tooling is engineered and lab-tested for each specific product so wet, sticky, soft, or delicate items are handled gently.

JLS uses vision guidance plus custom end-of-arm tooling and JLS-engineered VOB 2.0 vacuum-on-board technology, to pick product straight off the belt — no mechanical sorting and gentle handling. Each application is engineered and tested around the actual product.

It depends on your package format and product. Talon® TF loads thermoformers and vacuum-skin packs, Talon TL loads trays, Talon SA assembles sandwiches, Talon RD handles raw dough, Talon FW feeds flow wrappers, Kestrel® collates cylindrical products, Harrier loads bacon drafts, and Patty Hawk stacks frozen patties. JLS helps match the right system to your application.

Yes. JLS primary handling systems can be built to IP69K-capable ratings where the application demands it, with NEMA 4X controls and a round-tube or open-channel frame per platform — washdown-capable and designed to fit USDA-inspected and FDA-regulated plants and the daily high-pressure, high-temperature washdown.

Yes. JLS integrates with thermoformers, tray sealers, flow wrappers, and your existing upstream and downstream equipment so primary loading works as one coordinated line rather than a standalone machine.

Often, yes. The final design depends on available floor space, line speed, product presentation, controls, sanitation access, and your existing equipment. JLS reviews the full line so the system fits the way the plant already runs.

Yes. Before any capital commitment, JLS runs your actual product in our York, PA Flight Lab with tooling configured for it and validates the application on your real product — validating tooling, pick method, and placement before final design and reducing project risk.

It depends on line speed, shift schedule, and the current process, but a primary handling cell typically takes over multiple repetitive manual loading positions and runs them consistently across every shift — while also improving consistency, ergonomics, and food safety.

Cost depends on product, package format, throughput, and how many stations are automated — JLS provides a project-specific quote after reviewing your application. Most projects evaluate payback in the 24–36 month range, with labor savings that scale with the platform, line speed, and labor model. JLS reviews your product, package format, line speed, and current production challenges to size the investment and the return.

JLS systems are engineered for the lowest cost of ownership across the life of the line — through design (standardized platforms, tool-less changeover, and tooling matched to your product), implementation (Flight Lab validation and factory acceptance testing before shipment, so startup is predictable), and aftermarket support (in-house parts, service, remote diagnostics, and refurbishment that extend machine life for 15+ years). Payback is commonly evaluated in the 24–36-month range.

Designed, built, programmed, and tested at JLS Automation in York, Pennsylvania. Support comes from JLS's in-house support team, working directly with the engineers who built your system — remote diagnostics, on-site service, training, parts, and preventive maintenance.
