Why Peregrine IS

The cartoning system that does it all — in one monoblock.

Traditional carton formers drop the carton onto a lug belt, takeaway conveyor, or vacuum belt after forming — and that transfer point is the leading cause of downtime. Right-angle offsets eat floor space, full changeovers stop the line for hours, and separate controls add complexity. The Peregrine IS was engineered to eliminate each of these problems: PBT forming runs inline, PCT never lets go of the carton, and a single B&R controller runs everything from one HMI.

Flat blank in. Sealed carton out. Every Peregrine IS is configured to your primary pack, carton style, and facility — so the most complex step on the line becomes one of the most predictable. Also see the standalone Peregrine carton loader for lines where forming is already in place.

The Challenge

The gap most food lines share — and the system built to close it.

The Problem

Manual handling at this station is hard to staff — and harder to keep consistent

The same repetitive work, every shift — capping throughput and adding food-safety risk.

The repetitive manual work at this step is increasingly difficult to staff, and consistency slips across shifts. When people fall behind, the line slows, rework climbs, and hand contact adds a food-safety exposure. Add high annual turnover, rising ergonomic claims, and a shrinking labor pool, and the cost of doing it by hand keeps climbing.

Applications & Package Types

The Peregrine IS — integrated cartoning

The Peregrine IS forms the carton from a flat blank, loads product, and closes it — all inline in one monoblock. PBT (Positive Board Transport) puts forming and closing in line with loading for a dramatically small footprint. Vision identifies each pack so high-payload washdown-capable delta robots load it with no fixed tooling, while JLS TRAK and PCT keep the carton under full control from forming through closing. One configured-for-your-line turnkey system.

The Challenge

Traditional cartoning is bulky, rigid,
and prone to downtime.

The Problem

Conveyor transfers and rigid formers cost you floor space and uptime

The transfer between forming and loading is the #1 source of downtime.

Traditional cartoning lines drop the carton onto a vacuum belt or high-speed conveyor after forming — and that transfer point is the leading cause of downtime. Right-angle offsets to fit the former eat floor space, full changeovers stop the line for hours, and separate controls for the conveyor and the robots add complexity. Manual carton loading adds labor that's increasingly hard to staff.

The Solution

Vision-guided robotic loading — any pack into the carton, under full control

One Peregrine loads what your line makes.

Peregrine picks primary packages from your flow wrapper, thermoformer, or bagger — vision identifies each pack's position and orientation, so high-payload washdown-capable delta robots load them into top-load cartons with no fixed tooling. JLS TRAK moves cartons at high speed and PCT never lets go, eliminating the transfer-point failures that stall traditional lines. Add robots to scale. Designed, built, and programmed in-house by JLS.

Questions our engineers get asked most

Integrated cartoning, throughput, PBT board forming, carton control, sanitation, and ROI — answered by JLS application engineers.

JLS doesn't publish standard list pricing — cost is confirmed during the proposal process based on your product, package format, and configuration. Most JLS Peregrine IS projects evaluate payback in the 24–36 month range, depending on labor cost, shift schedule, line speed, and uptime improvement. JLS reviews your product, package format, line speed, staffing model, and current production challenges to determine where a Peregrine IS creates the strongest return.

The Peregrine IS is a fully integrated, vision-guided cartoning system. It forms cartons from flat blanks using PBT (Positive Board Transport), robotically picks and loads primary packages into those cartons, and closes them — all inline in one monoblock. JLS TRAK moves the carton at high speed and PCT keeps full control through loading and closing.

Flow packs, thermoformed pouches, flexible and VFFS bags, sleeves, and naked product. Vision identifies the position and orientation of each pack, so the robots load a wide variety of products into top-load cartons with no fixed tooling or guides — across bakery, cheese, frozen, meat & poultry, and assembled sandwiches.

The Peregrine IS runs glue and lock-style tri-seal cartons today — bring us your carton spec and we can quote it. Micro-flute corrugate is an application we’re actively developing. We believe the platform suits it, and we’d approach it the way we approach any new application: review the design together, then prove it with conceptual testing and your actual carton in the Flight Lab before anyone commits to a build. If micro-flute is on your roadmap, it’s a conversation worth having early.

The Peregrine IS runs at 120+ cartons per minute — at 30+ robot cycles per minute on a four-carton configuration, rates run above 120 (33 cycles ≈ 130 cpm) — with up to three loading robots handling roughly 450 products per minute. That covers more than 90% of applications. Actual throughput varies by application and is limited by upstream and downstream capacity. Additional loading robots can be added to increase throughput.

PCT (Positive Carton Transport) keeps full control of the carton through loading and never lets go. Traditional systems drop the carton onto a vacuum belt or conveyor after forming, and that transfer point is the #1 source of downtime. PCT eliminates it — paired with the JLS TRAK high-speed track for accurate positioning.

Up to ~50% smaller footprint than traditional top- and end-load cartoners. The inline PBT design eliminates the right-angle former offsets that consume floor space, so a Peregrine IS in line behind your primary packaging can free up significant production floor.

Changeover happens in seconds via an HMI recipe — no mechanical adjustment required. JLS TRAK changes pitch between carriers so different counts run back-to-back, and a quick-change carton blank station handles carton changes. Tool changes for the robots, when needed, take minutes.

Yes. The Peregrine IS is IP69K-capable, with open-frame cleanable construction and NEMA 4X controls. VOB tooling makes sanitation a simple end-of-arm tool swap rather than a cleaning event — no clogged airlines to contend with.

The Peregrine IS is designed, built, programmed, and tested at JLS Automation’s facility in York, Pennsylvania. A single B&R controller runs the JLS TRAK track and the robots from one HMI — no separate conveyor control system — and JLS writes and supports its own software, so service comes from the team that built your system.

It depends on the current process, line speed, and shift schedule, but the Peregrine IS typically takes over repetitive manual positions for carton forming, loading, and closing, and runs them consistently across every shift. Beyond headcount, processors choose automation for consistency, ergonomics, food safety, uptime, and more predictable throughput when labor availability is tight.

Yes. Before any capital commitment, JLS runs your actual product on a Peregrine IS in our York, PA Flight Lab with tooling configured for it, and validates the application on your real product — validating tooling, pick method, and carton loading before final design and reducing project risk.

Often, yes. The Peregrine IS is frequently integrated into existing production and packaging lines. The final design depends on available floor space, line speed, product presentation, controls, sanitation access, and your upstream and downstream equipment. JLS reviews the full line so the system fits the way the plant already runs.

To scope a Peregrine IS system, JLS typically reviews your product type and dimensions, photos or video of the current line, package format, target speeds, SKU mix, labor model, sanitation requirements, available floor space, and the main production problem to solve. Clear application detail up front makes it easier to recommend the right configuration and estimate scope.
